About Shri Ramcharitmanas
Lord Shiv and Shri Ramcharitmanas

Divine Origin
The genesis of Shri Ramcharitmanas is rooted in divine inspiration. Lord Shiv first conceived this sacred narrative within His own heart, giving meaning to the word “Manas,” which signifies the heart or inner consciousness. He named it Shri Ramcharitmanas because it lovingly preserved the life and virtues of Lord Ram within His heart before being revealed to the world. When the time was right, Lord Shiv narrated this divine story to His consort, Adi Shakti ji. Through Lord Shiv’s grace, the heart of Goswami Tulsidas overflowed with devotion and spiritual longing, which became the inner spark that led him to compose Shri Ramcharitmanas in 1574 A.D.
Ramayan and Ramcharitmanas, One Story
Before exploring the civilisational presence of the Ramayan, it is essential to understand the distinction, yet profound oneness, between Shri Ramcharitmanas and the Ramayan itself. The Ramayan is the eternal divine narrative of Lord Ram, first revealed through Maharishi Valmiki in Sanskrit, presenting the foundational life story, ideals, and cosmic purpose of the Lord. Shri Ramcharitmanas is not a different story, nor a reinterpretation, but a devotional re-manifestation of the same eternal truth, expressed through Goswami Tulsidas ji’s heart in the Awadhi language.
Where the Ramayan establishes sacred history and dharmic structure, Shri Ramcharitmanas brings that same divine essence closer to the human heart, emphasising bhakti, grace, compassion, and lived devotion. One may be seen as the river at its source and the other as the same river flowing through the villages of human life, different in expression, identical in essence, both carrying the eternal truth of Lord Ram.
A Living Cultural Legacy
Beyond being a religious scripture, the Ramayan stands as a cultural and civilisational blueprint of India. It is deeply embedded in the spiritual DNA of the land and remains a living legacy that transcends boundaries of colour, race, geography, and nationality. Its teachings resonate so universally that people across the world continue to apply its values in daily life. This global appeal explains why the Ramayan has been translated into nearly every major language and honoured in countries such as Germany, France, England, Russia, China, Iran, Thailand, and Indonesia. In Russia, Ramayan-based theatrical performances have been staged for decades, while in Indonesia it remains central to folklore, performing arts, and traditional storytelling.
India’s Peaceful Cultural Influence
Ancient India’s influence across the world spread primarily through peaceful cultural exchange. Sages, scholars, travellers, envoys, and merchants carried stories, philosophies, and epics like the Ramayan far beyond the Indian subcontinent, shaping societies through shared values, spiritual resonance, and storytelling rather than force or conquest.
Ramayan in Many Languages
As Sanskrit gradually ceased to be a language of everyday expression, saints and poets across different regions retold the story of Lord Ram in local languages, ensuring its message remained accessible and alive. In Telugu, Gona Budda Reddy composed the Ranganatha Ramayanam. In Tamil, Kambar authored the Ramavataram, known as the Kamba Ramayanam. In Malayalam, Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan composed the Adhyatma Ramayanam Kilippattu. In Kannada, the Jain poet Nagachandra, also known as Abhinava Pampa, wrote the Ramachandra Charitapurana, commonly called the Pampa Ramayana. In Bengal, Krittibas Ojha composed the Krittivasi Ramayan. In Maharashtra, Sant Eknath wrote the Bhavartha Ramayana in a deeply devotional style. In North India, Goswami Tulsidas composed Shri Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi, which became the most widely recited and influential rendering of the Ramayan across the region and beyond.
Spiritual Teachings
Shri Ramcharitmanas holds a unique and revered place within Hinduism. It offers guidance for all humanity, emphasising the value of saintly association, duties towards parents and Guru, responsibility to family and society, and recognition of the Divine presence in all beings. It upholds humility, devotion, service, unwavering faith, and surrender to righteousness.
The Message of Truth
At its core, the Ramayan instils an enduring conviction in the human heart. It affirms that whenever oppressive and unjust powers seek to crush human values, a higher force manifests to restore balance and confront injustice. From this timeless narrative, humanity draws the courage to walk the path of truth, sustained by the unshakeable belief that truth ultimately prevails. Across time, cultures, and continents, this eternal message continues to resonate as Satyamev Jayate, truth alone triumphs.
Life of Goswami Tulsidas ji
Goswami Tulsidas ji, who lived from 1497 to 1623 A.D., was a devoted follower of Lord Ram and one of India’s greatest poet-saints. He composed devotional works in Sanskrit, Awadhi, and Braj, all centred on the love, virtues, and divine character of Lord Ram. Sacred tradition holds that Rishi Valmiki, the author of the original Sanskrit Ramayana, was blessed by Lord Hanuman to be reborn in the age of Kaliyug as Tulsidas ji, with the purpose of once again singing the glories of Lord Ram for the benefit of humanity.
Composition and Lasting Legacy
With the blessings of Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati, Tulsidas ji composed Shri Ramcharitmanas in the Awadhi language, making the divine story accessible to the common people. Lord Shiv is believed to have bestowed His benediction upon this sacred work with the words “Satyam Shivam Sundaram,” affirming it as an embodiment of Truth, Godliness, and Beauty.
Tulsidas ji spent much of his life in the sacred cities of Varanasi and Ayodhya. Tulsi Ghat on the banks of the holy river Ganga in Varanasi bears his name, and he established the Sankatmochan Temple there in devotion to Lord Hanuman. He also initiated the tradition of Ramlila and composed the revered Hanuman Chalisa, which continues to inspire millions of devotees across the world.
