108 Names of Lord Shiv

To understand the power of Shiv Ashtottara Shatanamavali, we must delve into the circumstances surrounding Lord Ram’s incarnation on Earth. It was Sage Narad’s curse upon Lord Hari that led to His manifestation as Lord Ram in Ayodhya. However, it’s crucial to understand that this was all part of the divine play orchestrated by the Lord.

The Sage had asked for Lord Hari’s beauty to woo a beautiful princess. However, in order to keep His beloved devotee steadfast on the path of devotion and not fall into worldly attachments, the Lord gave him the face of a monkey. The Sage became a target of ridicule and fuming with anger, he cursed Lord Hari (Narayan).

Sage Narad’s curse was a reaction under the illusory energy of God (Maya), serving a greater purpose – the defeat of the Demon King Ravan at the hands of Shri Ram. Upon cursing Lord Hari to endure the pain of separation from His beloved, and to seek aid from monkeys, Sage Narad was confronted with reality as the Lord lifted His illusory web.

Realizing his mistake and feeling remorseful for cursing the Lord Sage Narad sought guidance from Lord Hari on how to overcome his remorse. In response, Lord Hari advised Narad ji to chant Lord Shiv’s 108 names.

As a form of penance and to atone for his error, Sage Narad was instructed to recite the 108 names of Lord Shiv. Through chanting these sacred names with devotion and sincerity, Narad ji sought Lord Shiv’s blessings and aimed to overcome his remorse from cursing Lord Narayan.

When Lord Hari took away the effect of His illusionary energy, then there was neither Lakshmi nor the Princess. The Muni was then extremely frightened and he held the feet of Lord Hari and said, “You take away the miseries of those who surrender unto your lotus feet, please save me O’ Lord…

…O’ Merciful, may my curse become false.” The compassionate Lord replied, “This was as per my will.” The Muni then said, “I said a lot of harsh words, how will my sins go away?”

The Lord said, “Go and chant one hundred names of Lord Shankar and your heart will feel pacified at once. No one is as dear to me as Lord Shiv, don’t ever let go of this belief, even by mistake…

…O’ Muni, on whom Purari (Lord Shiv) does not shower His grace, that person will never attain my devotion. Bearing this in mind, go and roam around on the earth. Now my illusionary energy will never come near you.”
