Dialogue between queens Kaushalya and Sunaina
…were respectfully sent in generous quantities to all by Shri Ram’s revered Guru, Sage Vashishth. After honouring their ancestors, the deities, esteemed guests, and the Guru, they consumed these edible offerings.
Four days passed in this manner. Each time the men and women beheld Shri Ram, their hearts filled with joy. People on both sides earnestly wished in their hearts not to return without Sita ji and Shri Ram.
They remarked, “Living in the forest with Shri Ram and Sita ji is as blissful as dwelling in countless Heavens. Anyone who prefers the comfort of home after leaving the company of Shri Lakshman, Sita ji, and Shri Ram should be considered as having fate against them…
…When fate is favourable to all, only then can one dwell near Shri Ram in the forest, bathing in the Mandakini three times a day and beholding Shri Ram, the garland (infinite source) of joy and auspiciousness…
…To wander with Shri Ram through the mountains (Kamadgiri), forests, sacred lands, and hermitages of sages, and to partake of roots, tubers, and fruits as sweet as nectar, fourteen years, filled with joy, would pass like a moment, without one even realising it.”
People exclaimed, “We are not worthy of such joy, nor can we be so fortunate.” Such was the sincere love and devotion towards the feet of Shri Ram shown by the people on both sides.
In this manner, people shared their heartfelt sentiments, and their affectionate words were truly delightful to hear. Meanwhile, seizing an opportune moment, the maids sent by Sita ji’s mother returned after inquiring about Dashrath ji’s Queens.
Upon learning from the maids that Sita ji’s Mothers-in-law were available, the Queens from King Janak’s court arrived. Queen Kaushalya warmly welcomed them with respect and had them seated as comfortably as the circumstances allowed.
Witnessing the humility and hearing the affection expressed by both sides, even the hardest thunderbolt would have melted. Overwhelmed with emotion, their bodies felt numb, tears streamed from their eyes, and they began scraping the Earth with their toenails, lost in deep thought.
They all appeared as embodiments of love for Sita ji and Ram ji, as if sorrow itself had taken countless forms and was grieving within their hearts. Sita ji’s mother, Sunayna ji, remarked, “Fate’s ways are indeed twisted, it is churning the soft froth of milk with the very tool used to sharpen a thunderbolt…
…Nectar is heard of only in stories, while poison is seen everywhere. All of the Creator’s deeds appear dreadful. Everywhere there are crows, owls, and herons, but swans are found only in the rare and sacred lake, Mansarovar (symbolic of Lord Shiv’s heart, where He conceived Shri Ramcharitmanas).”
Upon hearing Queen Sunaina’s words, Sumitra ji replied with a heavy heart, “Fate’s ways are indeed adverse and strange. God creates, preserves, and eventually destroys, His ways resemble the playful acts of a child, innocent yet lacking in wisdom.”
Queen Kaushalya said, “No one is to blame, for sorrow and joy, loss and gain, all rest in the hands of karma (one’s actions). The workings of karma are most mysterious, known only to God. It is He who grants the various fruits, whether good or bad…
…The Lord’s command governs all, including the processes of creation, preservation, and dissolution, even poison and nectar, which destroy and restore life. O’ Dear, there is no use in grieving out of attachment. The divine scheme of the Creator is eternal and unchanging…
…O’ Friend, by grieving over King Dashrath’s life and death in our hearts, we are in fact mourning the loss of our own well-being.” Sita ji’s mother replied, “Your virtuous words are undeniably true. After all, you are the wife of the Lord of Ayodhya, the greatest among all noble souls in history.”
Kaushalya ji, with her heart full of emotion, said, “If Lakshman, Ram, and Sita remain in the forest, the outcome will be auspicious, not unfavourable. Even so, I remain deeply worried for Bharat…
…By the grace of the Lord and your blessings, all my Sons and Daughters-in-law are as pure as the sacred Ganga river. O’ Dear friend, I have never sworn in the name of Ram before, but today I do so, and I speak to you in all sincerity…
…Even Goddess Saraswati Herself would hesitate to fully praise Bharat’s amiability, virtues, humility, glory, brotherhood, devotion, faith, and goodness. Can the vast ocean be emptied with a mere oyster shell?…
…I have always regarded Bharat as the shining light of our Solar dynasty. The King often said to me, “Gold is tested on the touchstone, and a precious gem is judged by the hands of a skilled jeweller. In the same way, a man’s true character is revealed in times of crisis…
…I admit my words today may be untimely, but wisdom often falters in moments of sorrow and deep affection.” Hearing Kaushalya ji’s words, pure like the waters of the celestial river Ganga, all the Queens were overcome with love.
Queen Kaushalya composed herself and said to Queen Sunayana, “O’ Queen of Mithila, you are a treasure of wisdom and dearly beloved by the King of Mithila, Janak ji. Who could truly be capable of offering you counsel?…
…O’ Queen, when you find the right moment, gently advise the King in your own way to keep Lakshman here and send Bharat to the forest with Ram. If this counsel finds favour in the King’s heart,…
…then Janak ji should, after due deliberation, endeavour to act accordingly. My greatest concern is for Bharat, his heart is filled with profound love for Ram. I fear that if he remains at home, he may suffer so deeply from separation that, like King Dashrath, he might even contemplate giving up his life.”
Upon seeing Kaushalya ji’s pure love and hearing her heartfelt, guileless words, all the Queens were filled with deep sorrow. Flowers showered from the sky to the sound of divine applause, and the enlightened Saints, Hermits, and Sages were overcome with emotion.
The assembly of Queens was astonished at this sight. Composing herself, Queen Sumitra said, “O’ Lady, nearly forty-eight minutes of the night have passed.” Hearing her words, Shri Ram’s mother, Kaushalya ji, rose lovingly from her seat.
Kaushalya ji said with warmth and sincerity, “You may now quickly return to your camp. Our destiny is now in the hands of God (Lord Shiv) or the Lord of Mithila, our steadfast pillar of strength.”
Upon seeing Kaushalya ji’s affection and hearing her humble words, Sunayana ji, beloved of King Janak, reverently touched her sacred feet. She said, “O’ Dear Lady, why should you not speak such gentle words? After all, you are the honoured wife of King Dashrath and the Mother of Shri Ram…
…The Lord always honours His servants, just as fire adorns smoke and mountains bear grass atop their peaks. King Janak is your servant in thought, word, and deed, and Lord Mahesh with Goddess Bhawani are ever your well-wishers and steadfast supporters…
…Who in this world could possibly be your supporter? Can a lamp gain renown by aiding the Sun? By going to the forest, Ram will accomplish the mission of the Demigods, and thereafter He will return to Ayodhya to reign forever…
